When I get new clients in looking to train, often the movement/exercise that needs the most attention is the squat.
It is essential that the squat is taught to all clients, even if a clients goal is to build upper body strength… They still have to squat down to pick up the weights.
The squat is one of the basic human movement patterns (Not just in exercise but in day to day life) and ideally we should all have the capacity to go through the full range of this movement without pain or trouble.
The Squat however is often the one movement where people are unable to achieve a full range of movement (ROM) or maintain stability and its also not uncommon for some individuals to experience pain when squatting (Often as a result of these issues)
One of the major problems is “Lack of Mobility/Flexibility”, meaning an individual can’t achieve the full ROM as a result of tight muscles. Another issue is simply “Lack of Practise” (A lot of individuals have never carried out a full squat with good form), meaning that an individual may lack the strength and stability to carry out the squat properly. (There are lots of aids we can use to help get people squatting)
These two issues can be easily rectified with the right corrective exercise, coaching and practise and here at 5S Fitness we pride ourselves in our knowledge and coaching ability when it comes to teaching correct form and technique.
